Roof cleaning and moss removal in Haslingden and Rossendale

Pennine weather is hard on roofs. Moss holds water against the tiles, breaks off into the gutters and eventually finds its way under the laps. Clearing it is a lot cheaper than re-roofing.

What the job involves

Roof cleaning starts with a careful scrape and brush to lift the bulk of the moss without cracking tiles or disturbing the laps. Everything that comes off the roof is collected, the gutters are cleared of the fallout, and the ground is left as I found it.

Once the roof is stripped back I apply a biocide soft wash treatment. This kills off the spores that are left behind so regrowth is much slower. I do not blast concrete or clay tiles with a high pressure lance. That strips the surface, drives water under the laps and shortens the life of the roof, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid.

Older stone slate and concrete interlocking roofs across the Rossendale valley both respond well to this approach. On steeper or more fragile roofs I work from a ladder and roof ladder rather than walking the tiles.

Why it's worth doing

The benefits of roof cleaning

Stops gutters blocking again

Most gutter blockages in this area are roof moss. Deal with the roof and the gutters stay clearer for longer.

Extends the life of the roof

Moss holds moisture against tiles and accelerates frost damage over the winter.

No damage from high pressure

Scrape and soft wash rather than a pressure lance, so the tile surface stays intact.

Transforms the look of the house

A clean roof line lifts the whole property and matters at valuation time.

FAQs

Roof Cleaning FAQs

Why do you not pressure wash roofs? +

I prefer to remove moss by hand scraping rather than pressure washing, as it is a safer and more effective way to protect the roof.

How long before the moss returns? +

After a scrape and biocide treatment you would normally expect several years before it needs looking at again, depending on how shaded the roof is.

Do you clear the gutters after cleaning the roof? +

Yes. All gutters are cleared once the roof cleaning has been completed.

Is it safe on an older stone roof? +

Yes, worked by hand from ladders. I will always tell you honestly if I think a roof is too fragile to touch.

Do I need to be at home? +

Yes. I will need access to both electricity and water while carrying out the work.
